Pro-life Democrats promote 95/10 plan

Pro-life Democrats in Congress have introduced a proposal that has the potential of reducing the abortion rate by 95% within the next 10 years. The 95/10 plan is a comprehensive legislative package which would ban discriminatory insurance industry practices against pregnant women; make the adoption tax credits permanent; fully fund the WIC program; expand funding of domestic violence programs; establish pregnancy prevention programs and require that insurers cover contraceptives. It is a proposal that should receive wide public support from both pro-life and pro-choice advocates. Listed below is a link to a recent column from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle about the plan. http://tinyurl.com/bs5ax

This sounds to me to be a quality plan. While abortion is no where on my radar screen as far as who I vote for, I feel that in the south it is important politically for Democrats to soften their posture on this issue.

This is an interesting development. I wonder why we call this debate pro-life and pro-choice. It seems to me that they should be called anti-abortion and pro-abortion. This seems more appropriate.

Pardon me Mild Mannered Reporter but I beg to differ sir. Most Democrats are not PRO-abortion. In fact, Hillary and Bill Clinton have maintained a stead position on this issue; that it should be "safe, legal, and rare." To back that up, abortions went up under Reagan, Up under Bush I, and down under Clinton. Democrats do not WANT women to have abortions; they want women to have a choice over how they use their own body. Now there logic may be wrong, but to call them pro-abortion is abhorrent.

I think both Altoid and Mild Mannered Reporter make some valid points. Pro-abortion and anti-abortion certainly can define those who want to the procedure to remain legal and those who want to ban. I use pro-choice and pro-life simply because that is what most activists in the abortion battle wish to be called.

Republicans have talked pro-life, but often oppose funding for pre-natal care and health care for low income families. Democrats who favor a strong social safety for children and families are certainly taking a pro-life position in that regard.

Despite my pro-life leanings, I think Altoid is right that there are pro-choice individuals who view abortion as a tragic circumstance and would open to supporting alternatives like the 95/10 plan. Then again, I have also known some pro-choice folks who look at abortion as a positive good. The bottom line is that you have thoughtful people and fanatics on both sides of the issue.

Well said rightdemocrat. The more Democrats start to actually talk about how they feel about abortion, the harder it is for right wing Republicans to pigonhole all Democrats as Liberal pro-abortionist.

The 95/10 Initiative is a great plan that can really make a difference to abortion rates as well as take the abortion card Republican love to play off the table at election time.

As a Board Member for NC Pro Life Democrats, I am very pleased that there are sites such as this that are promoting and informing people of the 95/10 Initiative. If you would like to find out more about the Initiative you can find that information at the Democrats For Life of America (NCPLD's parent organization)website at: www.democratsforlife.org

Thanks for your comments. I always try to promote the pro-life Democrats and have a link to Democrats for Life on my site. I have always thought that pro-lifers should be welcomed into the mainstream of the party.
